Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
