New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
