Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
