Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
